The CFG has been lobbying on the issue of food security for several years – Why?
It is concerned by the failure of successive governments to understand the important contribution of UK agriculture to long-term food security
Food security is a global issue but which impacts directly on the UK and presents great challenges to our own food supply chain
Global population growth over the next 40years will require a doubling of food production and this will have to be achieved from a declining area of land
At the same time the environmental impacts of food production systems will have to be greatly reduced
This presents tremendous innovation and technology challenges to food production globally
The UK has a temperate climate and more stable soils than most countries, and has the capacity along with other Northern European countries, to make a significant contribution to this extra production, as well as providing a buffer to global fluctuations in food supply and price
